Composite Buddha![]() A composite of 141 images of the Buddha. Included were paintings, drawings and photos of sculptures and statues. As a part of my ongoing quest to uncover the sociological currents that lurk below the creation of gods and religion (see: God and the Tool Making Apes - 2004.02.06). So, is there any real value in seeking a composite god? That remains to be seen. But bear in mind, we are a species that sees the Virgin Mary in grilled cheese sandwiches and the Christ in tree trunks. The source images used to generate this composite consist of paintings, drawings, photographs of sculptures, and images from popular media (such as television or film). By creating these images, it is my intent to uncover clues regarding the collective, cultural representation of deity, and to inspire discourse. The image is created by compositing (combining, layering, averaging) groups of exisiting photographs (or other images) into a single work. The process is achieved by manually aligning each image, then scanning and layering them using custom written software.
