altar of hubris

My piece, altar of hubris has been selected for the LACDA 2011 "Top 40" Juried Competition.

Here in the U.S., today is Memorial Day. I find the timing oddly appropriate, given that I created this piece as a tribute to those whose lives were spent in Iraq.

If the description of your clothing can contain the phrase "an ironic", please go die. Thanks. #mostlogicalresponse

Pursue the art that challenges your sensibilities, the ideas that frighten you out of your comfort zone. All other paths lead to mediocrity.

This is why you NEVER mix steel fittings and brass fittings:

Galvanic corrosion.

How is it possible that I know this, while the contractor that installed our water-heater does not?

Stupidity infuriates me.

The formal role of philosopher is all but missing from our culture. It is up to us, the artists, to fill that void and speak truth to power.

Struggling to find the energy to exist, let alone promote my art, find work, or maintain friendships.

I know that the last couple of years have been a difficult period for most of us. I know that I'm not the worst off. I know that I'm not alone. I know that it is always darkest before the dawn. I know many, many other clichés and platitudes.

But no amount of knowledge can fill this gaping hole, or stave off this mounting, gut-churning sense of despair.

Nothing can mend that which has always been broken, it is simply the natural state of the thing.

Not looking for sympathy.

Not sure what to do with feelings this overwhelming.

Vomit them on the page.
Wipe my mouth with the back of my hand.
Trudge onward.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Ben Folds, Amanda Fucking Palmer, Neil Gaiman, and Damian Kulash attempt to crank out 8 new songs tonight. I've had the live stream up on my second monitor all evening/night while working/coding/painting/attempting to get my shit together. Somewhere along the line, I forgot how much joy I find in the push/pull of collaborative art making, and magic that can happen when a supremely talented group of people throw their efforts behind an impossible task. In the end, they managed 6 songs in 12 hours. Absolutely impressive.

Listening to the final playback now... watching Neil and Amanda alternately nod off. :) So much awesome.

The entire thing should be up on Bandcamp by Tuesday night: http://music.amandapalmer.net/

g'night

If there were more sermons like this (and Christians who also believed it), I wouldn't have such a negative opinion of Christianity in general.
