Is it legal for a police officer to hide their badge number?

Not in California.

I spent a good part of last night watching a live-stream of cops storming #OccupyOakland. It was noted that many, if not most of the officers had their names and badge numbers covered. We wondered, is that legal? Google to the rescue: California Penal Code Section 830.10

As a point of clarification, the law covers UNIFORMED peace offices. Identification provides accountability, which is essential when the state (representing the people) empowers an individual to use force. That accountability protects both the police and the people.
