| | composite deities
Before the advent of the written word, the concept of god was a collective one, summoned from the communal psyche to satisfy a need for meaning and order required by the tool-making minds of our not-quite-ape forbearers. Eventually, they began to record their god(s), removing much of the community's participation in act of god creation and limiting religion's ability to adapt with society. Thus god has evolved in fits and spurts, out of phase with the very beings that created it.
Abstract: A series of pieces exploring the modern visage of god. The source images used to generate these composites consist of paintings, drawings, photographs of sculptures, and images from popular media (such as television or film). By creating these images, it is my intent to uncover clues regarding the collective, cultural representation of deity, and to inspire discourse.
Technical: These images are created by compositing (combining/layering/averaging) groups of exisiting photographs (or other images) into single works. The process is achieved by manually aligning each image, then scanning and layering them using custom written software.
